Poker Tips

While rules for Poker games can vary, there are some general strategies that can and should be used for all varieties of Poker games. Below is a list of tips and strategies that most good players keep in mind at all times. Following them might just help you improve your odds for winning the next time you sit down to play.

1. Before you sit down at a high stakes poker game, practice playing some low stakes games. Remember the old axiom, “practice makes perfect”. Even though you can never practice enough to play “perfectly”, practicing will make you a better player and improve your chances at success.

2. Once you feel that you are ready to play, be sure to select a game made up of players with similar skill levels. If you sit down at a table where you are outmatched, you will have a hard time holding on to your money, let alone winning the pot.

3. Make sure you choose game with which you are familiar. If you don’t know the rules of the particular Poker game being played, you will put yourself at a disadvantage and you will most likely make mistakes that will cost you.

4. Before you join a table to play, take time to observe the players. See if you can discern their playing styles.

5. If you want to be good at the game of Poker, you must know the probabilities. If you don’t know or can’t remember what the odds are of getting a certain hand, be sure to study them before you play.

6. Remember that the number of players participating in the game largely determines what is considered a good Poker hand. The greater the number of players, the stronger your hand needs to be to win.

7. Come to the table with the right amount of money. A general guideline is to bring at least 40 times the table limit.

8. Once you are holding your hand, be sure to keep it out of sight of other players and even game observers in the room. An observer may give your hand away, intentionally or not, by a poor Poker face.

9. Remember that you must keep a good Poker face too. Try not to express any emotions on your face and monitor your body language so as not to reveal anything about your hand.

10. If you are dealt a poor hand, it is better to fold early on in the game rather than later.
